New Feature: Customized Images for Mobile

An HJx Sale Horse Listing demonstrating customized mobile & desktop hero images.

Horizontal pegs, vertical holes.

I love our hero feature. "Hero" images are those large, attention-grabbing, full-width images you see at the top of web pages, such as in our premium Sale Horse Listings. They increase user engagement and are perfect for making a powerful first impression with buyers.

But one of the problems I frequently run into is landscape vs. portrait orientation, like when a client sends a stunning conformation photo smartly shot in landscape orientation (because horses are basically rectangles with a death wish). This layout displays beautifully on laptop & desktop screens, but usually leads to decapitated horses on cell phones.

Our new feature allows us to serve an entirely different image on mobile device displays. This means model photos with beautiful backgrounds will display in their full full-width glory on wide screens, while that stellar head-on close-up the show photographer took will properly knock the socks off our cell phone users.

Fairy Tale Farms' listing PLS Kings Cobra is serving as our guinea pig today. I had two great images for him, one shot in landscape orientation & one shot in portrait. Usually, having not one but two(!) excellent images from a seller is reason to celebrate, but no matter which image I chose for the hero position I was going to be dissatisfied with the results. The well-posed conformation photo with the pretty background was an uninspiring picture of his barrel on cell phones...

and by the time their beautiful jump photo expanded to take up the width of a laptop display we're left with nothing but knees and nose (which in this guy's case actually kind of works, but not everyone's horse is the literal definition of "knees to nose").

As excited as I am to announce this added customization for sellers, I'm also hopeful you'll find this page helpful as you're selecting photos for your HJx Listings. Crisp, high-quality, and (ideally) professionally shot photography should be your first priority, but considering how those photos will fit in that "hero" position will maximize your listing's impact on every device.

Astaria Farm's Surprise TCF came in with a beautiful, but very skinny! jump photo that lost all of it's charm when blown up to stretch across my desktop monitor. Now cell phone & tablet users will enjoy his perfectly proportioned jump shot while laptop & desktop browsers will be served an equally impressive black-background photo.
